What the file contains
- Six columns: trade, item, location, unit, quantity, notes.
- A wide notes column, to record the assumption instead of forgetting it.
- A structure directly usable in a pivot table.
A takeoff without a location is not checkable. The day the design team disputes a quantity, the only defence that holds is being able to say which room and which level each line came from. It is also what lets you pick the survey back up six months later without starting over.
Quantities are deliberately not totalled: adding square metres to linear metres means nothing. Grouping is done with a pivot table, on the trade and unit pair, once the sheet is filled.
Frequently asked questions
Why keep the unit separate from the quantity?
Because a cell containing "42 m²" is text, not a number: it does not add up, does not sort, and breaks any pivot table. Two columns, one numeric and one textual, are the only structure that stays usable.
Can this sheet be filled automatically?
That is exactly what FloorScan's Excel export does: areas per room and wall runs come out of the drawing with their location, in a structure of the same shape. The blank sheet is for when you measure on site rather than on a document.
And where do the quantities come from?
That is the column the template cannot fill for you. FloorScan pulls it from the PDF plan and exports it into a workbook of the same shape.
