The coverage printed on a tin assumes a prepared surface and even application. On a sanded, porous wall the first coat drinks more, and that is where the gap between the calculation and the reality of the job appears.
The calculation multiplies the area by the number of coats, divides by your coverage and rounds up to whole tins. The primer is counted separately, over a single pass, which matches common renovation practice.

What coverage should I enter?
The one for your product, printed on the tin, often between 8 and 12 m² per litre indoors and clearly less on a facade. In imperial the value is entered in square feet per gallon, the conversion is handled for you.
How do I get the area to paint?
By hand it is the room perimeter times the ceiling height, minus doors and windows, plus the ceiling if you paint it. From a plan, that calculation is done automatically room by room.
Are two coats enough?
Two coats are standard on a prepared surface of similar shade. A strong colour change, a new wall or a patch on old work may need three: the calculation follows the number you choose.
